A Biblical reference to our present moment
This short selection of text is said to be written for the purpose of ’Epanorthosis,’: “restoration to an upright or righteous state.
I am a Jewish Religious Studies scholar specializing in Hindu-Buddhist studies, Hermeneutics, Mythology, and Carl Jung's thought. I have been writing an essay on the Law of Nature and the Nature of Man. Today, while reading Genesis, I saw a reference to Timothy. I went there and came across the following quote in the King James Bible that I thought worthy of sharing, as it so accurately describes, in ancient Biblical language, the modern-day phenomenon of Donald Trump and many of the Republican Party:
“Know this also, that in the last days, perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses and lead away with divers lusts, captive silly women laden with sins. Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now, as Jannes and Jambres* stood against Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, unprincipled concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men . . .”
- Timothy 3:1-9
*Jannes and Jambres were the two Egyptian magicians who opposed Moses in Exodus 7:1-8:19.
